Mel Black: as owner, Mel not only develops curriculum but also delivers appraisal continuing education courses. He also teaches the National USPAP Courses as an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor and has earned the Certified Distance Education Instructor (CDE) designation through the International Distance Education Certification Center (IDECC). Mel is a licensed attorney in North Carolina and the District of Columbia. He focuses on representing and advising real estate appraisers, real estate agents, and other professionals throughout North Carolina and other states on a variety of matters, including complaints before their licensing boards.
Mel graduated Cum Laude from the North Carolina Central University School of Law where he was a member of the Law Journal. He earned the Education Specialist degree from Appalachian State University and the Masters of Education from Winthrop College. He was the Executive Director of the North Carolina Appraisal Board for nearly 8 years. Prior to that, he served on the staff of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission for over 3 years. While with the Appraisal Board, he was elected or appointed to a variety of national appraisal-related positions, including President of the Association of Appraiser Regulatory Officials (AARO) and a member of The Appraisal Foundation Advisory Council (TAFAC). He was selected as an appraisal subject matter expert to review national appraiser examination items and also selected to provide testimony at a hearing on appraiser qualification criteria before the Appraiser Qualifications Board.
Erin Tracy Black She is School Director of record for the various regulatory agencies with which we work. An entrepreneur since 2000, in 2003 she began developing North Carolina Real Estate Education, Inc.’s process for offering classes live and online. She is proud to say that BrightPath (formerly NCREEI) was the first independently-owned appraisal school in NC to offer secure registration and payment online for our students’ convenience. We continue to be very customer service oriented and student-centered as we grow with BrightPath Education Services’ introduction into the field of professional education.
Brian Handly is an Advisor for BrightPath Education Services as well as an Operating Partner with Frontier Capital. He was previously a GM of Microsoft’s Online Services division and possesses more than 25 years of technical, operational and executive management experience. Prior to his tenure at Microsoft, Brian was co-founder and CEO of Accipiter, which was acquired by Atlas in December of 2006 followed by the $6.1 billion acquisition of Atlas by Microsoft in 2007.
Handly has also enjoyed significant success in several other start-ups and entrepreneurial activities. Handly holds a BSBA in marketing from the University of Missouri and has completed significant Computer Science course work at North Carolina State University.
Brian is an Executive in Residence at NCSU and also serves on the Board of Advisors for DigitalSmiths, StatSheet, Adzerk and on the Board of Directors for WebAssign.
