Frequently Asked Questions  FAQs

How do I become an Appraiser?

  1. First, check with your state's licensing board to see how you can obtain a 'trainee' license. Find out the list of classes you must take to get to this first step. Then register for your trainee license.
  2. Next, work towards obtaining your trainee license. This is usually done by taking classes and passing a test, and/or having some experience in appraisal work. (Check with your state's Licensing Board).
  3. After getting your trainee license, find an appraiser who can be your mentor. You'll need a supervising appraiser to help you with your experience hours that you'll need to complete. Finding a supervising appraiser to help you may be a challenge, but it will be well worth it.
  4. Obtain a job as a trainee at a real estate appraiser's office or at a Financial Institution such as a Bank or Saving and Loan
